The Volcano Art Center will present “Kapa Rhythms,” an exhibit of new work by noted Hawaii artists Pam Barton and Caren Loebel-Fried from Saturday through May 18 at the VAC Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The Volcano Art Center will present “Kapa Rhythms,” an exhibit of new work by noted Hawaii artists Pam Barton and Caren Loebel-Fried from Saturday through May 18 at the VAC Gallery in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The public is invited to an opening reception with the artists from 5-7 p.m. Saturday.
In this exhibit, kapa, or Hawaiian bark cloth, is used as a surface for design, growing from a tradition rich with legends that illuminate and stimulate.
Kapa transforms into an opaque or gossamer fabric, lending itself to being woven, sculpted and draped, as a functional object, or a decorative form.
In “Kapa Rhythms,” the artists present work created individually and together, inspired by historic Hawaiian legends about kapa from the storied places of Hawaii. The artists noted: “The legacy that we inherited from our ancestors has become an impetus to create, and to make art using methods developed by those who came before us, inspired by the same characteristics and properties of the same natural fibers. … We are delighted to share our love and respect for our heritage, and to show kapa as a vital, inspiring art form and medium.”
The duo will demonstrate traditional Hawaiian kapa-making from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at the VAC Gallery.
